Social Media Optimization (SMO) the new SEO?

Another new acronym to get our arms around is SMO, Social Media Optimization. We are seeing social media more and more becoming main stream strategies to a company’s marketing efforts.

I don’t anticipate that SMO will replace SEO, but work in conjunction with your SEO and SEM campaigns. Social media optimization has shifted the landscape of search marketing. By using blogs, wikis, videos, content postings, and social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or MySpace or micro-blogs such as Twitter, you can capture a greater number of organic positions. Social media optimization leverages a new set of tools to accomplish the same goal as SEO: more exposure for your site on Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing and other sites. The challenge is knowing how to use those tools and techniques more effectively.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) will become a strategic component to your SEO and SEM programs. If you are not leveraging your social media initiatives and social networking sites to increase your exposure and communicate with your niche consumer, your search engine status may become vulnerable to your competitors.

Just another new acronym to add to your marketing mix.

Food for thought,
